Each of the strands can be pulled apart a bit to make it a bigger target for a better place to catch a spark from your flint and steel or other device. I cut each "rope" into half or even thirds - and they easily start a flame - strong enough to light more tinder, kindling and make a substantial fire.

These fuses produce a nice flame for igniting tinder in less than ideal conditions. The handy protective tube in which they come is a nice touch. Aside from the usual methods, it can also be lit with a ferro rod or a spark-lite tool.
