Kamrat Knife G10 Hi-Vis
Kamrat Companion
There comes a time when an experienced bushcrafter is ready to take his knife to the next level. When you have reached the point that you realize that your outdoor experience in enhanced through skill and finesse, rather than pure brute force, you are ready to experience a knife like the Kamrat Companion.
The blade thickness for this knife has been specifically chosen to be 3/32” O1 Tool Steel. It is very common for a scandi ground bushcraft knife of this size to be made of 1/8” or even 5/32” steel. Through experience, the 3/32” blade hits a real sweet spot. It is thick enough that the scandi bevel is wide enough to give you the cutting experience you have come to expect from this type of grind. However, when the material you are cutting works its way into the blade, the thinness of this knife lets it pass clean through the material you are cutting. It takes the biggest disadvantage of the scandi grind and minimizes it, while still giving you that outstanding scandi grind performance.
The Kamrat Companion is scandi ground to zero giving a sharp cutting edge. A knife is intended to cut things, and it is the single most important feature of any knife. After the cutting edge, the only interaction you have with the knife itself is the handle. If it is not comfortable and versatile, the cutting edge is worthless. The oval shape of the handle provides a palm swell that fills the hand comfortably, and is missing on so many knives today. It also allows reverse grip cutting to be as comfortable as the forward cut. The oval shape also allows for secure and comfortable grip while still not wanting to rotate in your hand. It is a handle shape that has stood the test of time, and for good reason.
The overall size and dimensions of the Kamrat Companion are right in line with most descriptions of the perfect “bushcraft” knife. Making it extremely handy for everyday chores, carving, food prep, etc. There comes a time when slight adjustments, like “just a little bit lighter” and “a little bit thinner” end of making the difference between a knife that stays in the closet, and a knife that makes it into the field. Confident that this knife will be in the field often it is appropriately named the Kamrat Companion, with Kamrat being Swedish for companion.
