Worked construction in Chicago in the 1970s. Used to get wool gloves just like these at the Army-Navy surplus store on Lincoln just south of Belmont, buck a pair. Must be a warehouse full of them somewhere. Wore them under unlined leather gloves or mitts. They had those at the surplus store too. Your leather mitts are a little lighter weight but for the price I can't go wrong.

Thin, warm, cheap, what's not to like? I have them everywhere.
Wear them as is, under a heavier glove like they were designed for, but they also fit well under a rubber/neoprene glove. Waterproof and warm, see if Gor- tex can do that.
I understand the military fazed these out, hope they stay available.

These keep my hands comfortable when I'm on the move and temps are in the teens. A little slick on the knife handle but not a huge issue and you can't beat the price for something that won't let you down.
