Alaskan Micro Snare-It’s my pleasure to introduce a brand new product to my Alaskan Snare series; the Alaskan Micro Snare. The idea sprang from multiple conversations I’ve had over the last year or so with fellow trappers, instructors, and bushcraft enthusiasts interested in a snare that was lighter, easier to pack, and sized more appropriately for small game than the Alaskan Survival Snare but stronger and more resilient than small gauge single strand wire. So after toying around with a few ideas and assorted prototypes, I’ve settled on this particular build.
Fashioned from 36” of 3/64” diameter 1x19 steel cable, one end has a 2” terminal anchor loop held by a crimped double aluminum ferrule. On the other end, an adjustable snare loop is held by a simple steel friction microlock and crimped aluminum stop. Although I could have left it off, the addition of a twist on support collar makes setting these so much more efficient and versatile.
These are the perfect size and strength for squirrel, rabbit, hare, prairie dog, muskrat, pine marten, woodchuck, wild turkey, waterfowl, and similar sized critters. Weighing next to nothing and taking up essentially no space, they slip right into a cargo pocket, handlebar bag, backpack, pocket survival kit, vehicle emergency kit, pilot’s kit bag, or anywhere else a little food procuring peace of mind might be needed. With the ever increasing civil unrest and political division these days, it only makes sense to train hard and get prepared for the worst!
